Comcast Secures $3B Deal to Keep Olympics on NBC Through 2036
Comcast Corp. and NBCUniversal have locked in U.S. broadcasting rights for the Olympic Games through 2036 in a $3-billion deal.
The agreement, which takes effect this year, strengthens Comcast’s partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and expands its digital rights across NBC, Telemundo, and Peacock. The extension ensures NBCUniversal’s coverage of the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the 2036 Summer Games at a yet-to-be-determined location.
For the IOC, the deal provides crucial financial stability, as it heavily relies on revenue from Comcast to support the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Meanwhile, Comcast is doubling down on live sports to stay competitive in the streaming era, securing broader streaming rights for upcoming Olympics—part of a previous $12-billion commitment covering Games through 2032.
The agreement follows the success of the Paris Olympics, reinforcing NBC’s long-standing dominance in Olympic broadcasting.
NBCUniversal Extends Olympic Coverage as Paris 2024 Sets Streaming Records
NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Paris 2024 Olympics reached an average of 67 million viewers daily across broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms. Fans streamed over 23 billion minutes—led by Peacock—marking a significant surge from the pandemic-impacted Tokyo Games.
IOC President Thomas Bach praised the new deal with Comcast as “groundbreaking,” noting it extends beyond traditional media rights. NBC, which first aired the Olympics in 1964, has now broadcast 19 Games, including the last 13 consecutively—more than any other U.S. media company.
Securing the Olympics has been a key priority for Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts. In addition to broadcasting, Comcast provides business solutions to the IOC as an Olympic ring-holder. “It is our honor to continue delivering world-class content that connects with Americans while expanding our technological support for the IOC,” Roberts said.
